Word Guess is a quick daily-sized puzzle: there is one hidden five-letter word, and you have six guesses to find it. Every guess tells you which letters are right, which are in the word somewhere else, and which aren’t in it at all.
The rules
Type any real five-letter word and press Enter. Words that aren’t in the list shake and don’t use up a guess.
After each guess, every letter turns a color to show how close it was.
Find the word within six guesses to win. If you run out, the answer is shown.
What the colors mean
Green: the letter is in the word, in exactly that spot.
Gold: the letter is in the word, but in a different spot.
Gray: the letter isn’t in the word, or not as many times as you typed it.
The on-screen keyboard keeps track of the best thing you know about each letter, so you can see at a glance which letters are left.
Repeated letters
Letters are matched one copy at a time. Green matches count first, then gold, and only as many copies as the hidden word really has. If you guess a word with two Es and only one turns gold or green, the word has just one E; the other E is gray.
Normal and hard mode
In normal mode you can guess any word in the list, even one that ignores what you have already learned. That can be a smart way to test several new letters at once.
In hard mode every hint must be used: green letters have to stay in their spots and gold letters must appear in every later guess. Your record and guess distribution are kept separately for each mode.
Tips for solving in fewer guesses
Start with a word full of common letters, such as one with two vowels and letters like R, S, T, L or N.
Use your second guess to try five new letters rather than shuffling the ones you found.
Think about where a gold letter can still go: it can’t be in any spot where it was already gold.
Remember that answers can repeat a letter. If you are stuck, try a word with a double letter.
