How to Play Scorpion Solitaire

Learn the rules of Scorpion solitaire: build four King-to-Ace runs in a single suit, move any face-up card with everything on it, and use the three-card stock wisely.
Play Scorpion
Scorpion is a one-deck solitaire with a twist: you can pick up any face-up card, together with everything stacked on top of it, as long as it lands on the next card up in its own suit. Untangle the columns into four complete King-to-Ace runs to win.

The goal

Build four complete runs from King down to Ace, each in a single suit. When a column ends in a full run, it clears off the table into the completed pile. Clear all four suits to win.

The layout

  • All 52 cards are dealt into seven columns of seven cards.
  • In Classic mode, the bottom three cards of the first four columns start face down. In Relaxed mode, every card starts face up.
  • The last three cards wait in the stock. Completed runs collect beside it.

Moving cards

  • A card can go on the next card up in its own suit: the 7♠ goes on the 8♠, nothing else.
  • You can pick up any face-up card, and every card on top of it comes along, whether they are in order or not.
  • Only a King, with whatever is on it, can go into an empty column.
  • When you uncover a face-down card, it turns face up.

The stock

Tap the stock once to deal its three cards face up onto the first three columns. You only get one deal and there are no redeals, so it often pays to hold it back until the cards you can reach are used up.

Tips

  • Each card has exactly one place it can go, so look for the card you need next rather than the card you can move.
  • Freeing face-down cards early gives you more choices later.
  • An empty column is valuable: save it for a King that is buried under a long pile.
  • Moving a card drags everything on top of it along, which can bury cards you need. Think about what comes with it.
  • Deals are checked by a solver before you see them. If you get stuck, undo and try a different order.
