Echo is a quick memory game. Four colored pads light up in order, and you play the pattern back. Every round the same pattern returns with one more step on the end, so each round is a little harder than the last.
The rules
Press Start. While the label says Watch, the pads light up one at a time. Taps are ignored while the pattern plays.
When it says Your turn, tap the pads in the same order.
Get the whole pattern right and it plays again with one new step added at the end.
One wrong tap ends the run, and the pad you needed flashes so you can see what went wrong.
Each tap has a time limit, shown by the bar under the label. Run out of time and the run ends.
Pads and controls
The four pads differ in color, shape and corner: a green circle at the top left, a red triangle at the top right, a blue square at the bottom right and a yellow star at the bottom left. You can follow the pattern by shape or position as well as by color.
Tap or click the pads to answer. On a keyboard, use the keys 1 to 4 or the arrow keys, both going clockwise from the top left. Space or Enter starts a round. In the browser each pad plays its own note, and the speaker button turns the sound off.
Scoring
Your score is the longest pattern you played back in full. If you repeat a five-step pattern and slip on the sixth, you score 5. There is no finish line: the goal is to beat your best, which is kept separately for each mode.
Modes
Classic: the pattern grows by one step a round and plays a little faster as it gets longer.
Fast: shorter flashes and only two seconds for each tap. Good for when Classic feels easy.
Reverse: play the pattern back backwards, last step first. You have to hold the whole sequence in mind before your first tap.
Tips for longer runs
Only the last step is new each round. Remember the pattern you already know and just add the newest step.
Group steps into chunks of three or four, like a phone number.
Say the steps to yourself as shapes or corners ("circle, star, star, square"). Saying them can stick better than color alone.
In Reverse, read the pattern back to yourself from the end before you start tapping.
If you get interrupted, the round replays from the start when you press Resume, so you never lose your place.
