Crosswords get easier with a few habits. Start with a quick 5×5 or 7×7 to learn them, then move up to 10×10, 15×15 and 20×20 puzzles.

Start with what you know

Read through the clues and fill in any answer you’re sure of, wherever it is. Short answers are often the easiest place to start.

Let crossing letters do the work

Every letter you place is part of another word. A couple of letters in an unfamiliar answer often bring it to mind, so switch between Across and Down clues as you go.

Read the clue’s form

  • A plural clue has a plural answer, and a past-tense clue a past-tense one.
  • The number of squares tells you the length, which rules out a lot of guesses.
  • Pick a theme you enjoy: movies & TV, music, sports or video games. Most answers come from it, with everyday words filling in where they cross.

Use help without spoiling it

Check marks wrong letters in red in the selected square, word or whole puzzle. Reveal fills in letters. Try Check on one word before revealing anything, and turn on “Show correct words” to see each finished word turn green.

Play every day

Solving regularly is the fastest way to improve. The daily crossword is a new 10×10 puzzle every day, the same for everyone.
