How to play Jigsaw Sudoku

Sudoku with wobbly, irregular boxes instead of squares.

The goal

Fill the grid so every row, every column and every outlined region contains the numbers 1 to 9 exactly once.

The regions

  • Instead of 3×3 boxes, the grid is split into nine irregular regions of nine cells, marked by thick borders and light shading.
  • Each region works just like a Sudoku box: it holds 1 to 9 once each.
  • Every puzzle has a new region layout and exactly one solution.

Playing

  • Tap an empty cell, then tap a number to place it. Tapping the same number again clears the cell.
  • The dark numbers are the puzzle’s clues and can’t be changed.
  • The selected cell’s row, column and region are shaded, and matching numbers are highlighted.
  • Each number key shows how many of that number are still to place.

Tools

  • Notes: turn it on to pencil in possible numbers instead of placing them. Placing a number removes it from the notes in the same row, column and region.
  • Erase clears the selected cell. Undo takes back your last change.
  • Hint fills in the selected cell, or the next cell that needs one.
  • A number that repeats in a row, column or region turns red, along with the number it clashes with.

Difficulty

  • Easy: 36 clues, and every step is a cell with only one possible number.
  • Normal: 30 clues. Sometimes a number fits only one cell in its row, column or region.
  • Hard: 24 clues. You’ll need notes and a few steps of thinking ahead.
  • Your best times are kept separately for each difficulty.

Keyboard

  • 1–9 to place a number, the arrow keys to move, Backspace to erase, N for notes, H for a hint, and Ctrl or ⌘+Z to undo.
