How to play Word Groups

Learn how to play Word Groups: sort sixteen words into four hidden groups of four, avoid red herrings, and solve each puzzle with fewer than four mistakes.
Play Word Groups
Word Groups hides four groups of four in a grid of sixteen words. Each group shares something: a meaning, a category, or a bit of wordplay. Find all four before you make four mistakes.

The rules

  • Tap four words you think belong together, then tap Submit (or press Enter on a keyboard).
  • A correct group locks in at the top of the board, showing its category and color.
  • A wrong guess costs one of your four mistakes. On the fourth mistake the game ends and every group is revealed.
  • If three of your four words belong together, you will see “One away…”.
  • Guessing the same four words twice does not cost a mistake.

Group colors

Each puzzle has one group at each of four difficulty levels, shown by color from easiest to trickiest: mint, apricot, lavender, then coral. The easiest group is usually a plain category, like kitchen utensils. The trickiest is often wordplay, like words that go before “ball” or words hiding a smaller word.

Watch for red herrings

Many puzzles include a word that seems to fit two groups. LIME could be a fruit or a shade of green; JACK could be a playing card or a tool. Every word belongs to exactly one group, so if a category has five possible words, one of them is needed somewhere else.

Tips for solving

  • Look for the group with no overlaps first and lock it in. Fewer words make the rest easier to see.
  • Count candidates: if a category has exactly four possible words, that group is safe to submit.
  • Say the words out loud and try adding a word before or after them. Wordplay groups often hide there.
  • Use Shuffle when you feel stuck; a new layout helps you spot links you missed.
  • After a “One away…”, swap just one word rather than starting over.

Puzzles, time and records

You get a new puzzle each time, and none repeats until you have played them all. The timer starts at your first tap, and your best solve time, games played and win rate are saved. A game in progress is saved too, so you can come back to it later.
