How to Play Tile Match

Learn the rules of Tile Match, how the seven-slot tray works, and tips for clearing every level without filling the tray.
Play Tile Match
Tile Match is a relaxing puzzle about stacked picture tiles. Tap tiles into a tray at the bottom and clear them three of a kind. Clear the whole stack before the tray fills up and the next level unlocks.

The rules

  • Tiles are stacked in layers. A tile is free when no tile on a higher layer overlaps it; covered tiles are shaded darker.
  • Tap a free tile to move it into the tray. It slots in next to any tiles with the same picture.
  • Three tiles with the same picture in the tray clear away.
  • The tray has seven slots. If it fills up with no three alike, the level is lost. Clear every tile to win.

Every level can be cleared

Each picture comes in sets of three, and every level is built along a known way to clear it, so there is always a way through. The challenge is finding it: later levels have more tiles, more layers and up to twelve different pictures.

Undo and Shuffle

  • Undo puts your most recent tiles back on the board. You can use it three times per level.
  • Shuffle mixes up the pictures still on the board, twice per level. The new layout still leaves a way to clear the board.
  • Save them for when the tray is getting full rather than spending them early.

Tips for keeping the tray clear

  • Before tapping, look for pictures you can finish: if two hearts are in the tray and a heart is free, take it.
  • Avoid starting new pictures when the tray already holds four or five tiles.
  • Uncover tiles in the upper layers first; they hide the most tiles underneath.
  • Peek at shaded tiles: you can see what is coming before it is free.

Levels, times and scores

There are 30 levels. Clearing one unlocks the next, and the Levels list keeps your best time on each. Your score for a level grows with its size, plus a bonus for finishing quickly.
