Play Sea Battle
Sea Battle is a guessing game of hidden fleets. You and the computer each hide five ships on a 10 by 10 grid, then take turns firing at squares on the other grid. Sink every enemy ship before yours go down.

Your fleet

Each side has five ships: a carrier (5 squares), a cruiser (4), a destroyer (3), a submarine (3) and a patrol boat (2). Ships lie in a straight line across or down the grid. They can touch each other but never overlap.

Placing your ships

  • A new game starts with a random layout, so you can press Start right away.
  • Drag a ship to move it. A green outline means it fits there; red means it overlaps another ship.
  • Tap a ship to pick it, then tap it again (or press Turn) to turn it. With a ship picked, tap open water to send it there.
  • Shuffle deals a fresh random layout.

Taking turns

You fire first: tap any square on the enemy grid. A white peg is a miss. A red peg with flames is a hit. When every square of a ship has been hit, it sinks and is shown on the grid. Then the computer fires back at your fleet, and the status line tells you what each of the last two shots did. The first side to sink all five enemy ships wins.

Difficulty levels

  • Easy: the computer mostly fires at random. Good for learning.
  • Normal: it searches in a checkerboard pattern, then closes in around each hit and follows the line until the ship sinks.
  • Hard: it works out every way the remaining ships could still fit and fires at the likeliest square.

Tips for winning

  • Every ship is at least two squares long, so fire on a checkerboard pattern to search with half the shots.
  • After a hit, try the four squares around it. Once two hits line up, keep going along that line in both directions.
  • Once the small ships are sunk, spread your search shots further apart: the ships left are longer.
  • On a phone, use the switch or tap the mini-map to check your own fleet.
