How to Play Memory

Learn the rules of Memory, the classic pairs card game: flip two cards at a time, remember where each picture is, and find every matching pair in as few moves as you can.
Play Memory
Memory is the classic pairs game. Every picture is printed on two cards, all the cards start face down, and you turn them over two at a time to find the matches. It is quick to learn and a great workout for your short-term memory.

The rules

  • All the cards start face down. Every picture appears on exactly two cards.
  • Tap a card to turn it over, then tap a second card.
  • If the two pictures match, the pair stays face up.
  • If they don’t match, both cards turn back over after a moment, so try to remember where they were.
  • You win when every pair is face up.

Moves and time

Each pair of cards you turn over counts as one move, whether it matches or not. The clock starts when you turn over your first card.
Your best time and your fewest moves are saved separately for each difficulty, so you can try to beat both.

Difficulty levels

  • Easy: 12 cards, 6 pairs. A good warm-up.
  • Normal: 16 cards, 8 pairs. The classic size.
  • Hard: 30 cards, 15 pairs. Much more to keep in your head.

Tips for fewer moves

  • Turn over a card you haven’t seen yet first. If you already know where its partner is, go straight to it.
  • Only guess a second card when you don’t know where the match is, and use that guess to learn a new card.
  • Work through the board in order, row by row, so it is easier to remember what you have seen.
  • Say the pictures to yourself, like “star, top left”. Linking a picture with a place helps it stick.
  • Each picture has its own color, so remember both the color and the shape.

Controls

Tap or click a card to turn it over. If a wrong pair is still showing, tapping another card turns it back straight away, so you never have to wait.
On a computer you can also use the arrow keys to move between cards and Enter or Space to turn one over.
