Canfield is a fast, demanding solitaire built around a thirteen-card reserve. The foundations don’t start at Ace: the first card dealt sets the starting rank for all four. Every deal here can be won, but you’ll need to plan.
The layout
Top left is the stock, with the waste beside it. To the right are the four foundations.
One card is dealt to the first foundation. Its rank is the starting rank for every foundation, and the empty ones show it.
Under the stock is the reserve: thirteen cards, with only the top one face up.
Under the foundations are four tableau piles, each starting with one face-up card.
Building the foundations
Each foundation builds up in one suit from the starting rank and turns the corner from King to Ace. If the first card is a 7, each suit goes 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A, 2 and so on up to 6. Cards on a foundation stay there.
The tableau and the reserve
Build the tableau down in alternating colors, like a red 6 on a black 7. Building turns the corner too, so a King can go on an Ace.
You can move any properly built sequence together, including a whole pile.
When a pile empties, the reserve’s top card fills it straight away. Once the reserve is empty, any card or sequence can go into an empty pile.
The reserve’s top card can also go to a foundation or onto a tableau pile, and the next one turns face up.
The stock, Draw 3 and Draw 1
Tap the stock to turn cards onto the waste: three at a time in Draw 3, the classic game, or one at a time in Draw 1, which is easier. Only the top waste card can be played. When the stock runs out, tap its empty spot to turn the waste back over. You can go through it as many times as you like.
Choose a mode from New game, where you can also restart the current deal. Records are kept separately for each mode.
Controls
Drag a card or sequence to move it, or double-tap a card to send it to the best spot.
On a keyboard, 1 to 4 play a pile’s top card, R plays the reserve card, W plays the waste card, Space draws and U undoes.
Cards nothing else could need go up to the foundations by themselves, and once the rest only needs the foundations the game plays itself out.
If no useful move is left you’ll be told, and you can undo, restart the deal or start a new one.
Tips for winning
Emptying the reserve is the key to Canfield. Play from it whenever you can, even before the waste.
An empty pile refills from the reserve, so moving a whole pile onto another one frees a reserve card.
Don’t rush cards to the foundations if they could still hold a reserve card in the tableau.
Every deal can be won. If you get stuck, undo a few moves or restart and try a different order.
