How to Play Baker’s Dozen Solitaire

Learn Baker’s Dozen solitaire: thirteen face-up columns, foundations by suit and building down regardless of suit. Rules, controls and tips to win more deals.
Play Baker’s Dozen
Baker’s Dozen is an open solitaire: every card is face up from the first move, so there’s no luck in what you’ll uncover, only planning. Thirteen columns of four cards, a baker’s dozen, have to be sorted onto four foundations.

The layout

One deck is dealt face up into thirteen columns of four cards. Any King is moved to the bottom of its column during the deal, so a King never covers another card.
Above the columns (beside them on a phone held sideways) are four empty foundations, one for each suit.

The rules

  • Foundations build up in suit, from Ace to King.
  • In the columns, build down regardless of suit: any 6 can go on any 7.
  • Only the top card of a column can move, one card at a time.
  • An empty column stays empty; nothing can be moved into it.
  • You win when all 52 cards are on the foundations.

Playing on Everyday Games

  • Drag a top card onto a column or a foundation, or double-tap it to send it to the best spot.
  • Cards that nothing else could need go up to the foundations automatically, and once the rest plays out by itself, the game finishes for you.
  • Undo takes back your last move along with any automatic plays after it.
  • Every new deal is checked by a solver, so it can be won. You can also restart the same deal from New game.

Strategy

  • Find the low cards first. Aces and Twos buried under high cards are what usually block a game, so plan how to dig them out.
  • Before moving a card, check what it will cover. Burying a card the foundations need soon can cost the game.
  • Clearing a column gains nothing, because it can’t be refilled. Use cards as building spots instead.
  • With two cards of the same rank available as targets, choose the one whose column you won’t need to dig into soon.

Why it’s a good game

With everything visible, Baker’s Dozen rewards looking ahead a few moves. Most deals can be won with care, which makes it a relaxing but thoughtful daily solitaire.
